The Normandy Landings Memorial Wall

Keeping the name of the RAF Servicing Commandos alive is a key goal of our Association. So when we discovered that there is a Normandy Landings Memorial Wall close to the D Day Museum near Portsmouth it seemed only right that the RAFSC were duly remembered. Veterans of the landings can have their names recorded on an old large brick wall together with their Unit’s crest. Unsurprisingly, the majority of Units and people remembered on the wall are RN, Army and Royals which only made us more determined to ensure that the RAF was recognised as taking part in the amphibious landings.

A few Servicing Commandos have privately arranged for their names to be recorded on the wall, they are:

Jack Edy 3207 SC
Alan McQuillin 3210 SC
Stan Elliss 3209 SC
Tony Stott Ser Ech RAF (I’m not sure if they were part of the Servicing Commandos but thought it better to include him).

But as we celebrated the 80th anniversary of D Day in 2024 we decided to remember the 2 Servicing Commandos who died during the landings and to have the RAFSC crest installed in recognition of all the Servicing Commandos who took part.  Funds were donated to the Assn to cover the cost of installation.

The 2 men who died are:

Jack Crofts 3207 SC
Edward Skeggs 3209 SC

N Cromarty
Gp Capt RAF(Retd)
